Refrigeration and Air Conditioning System Controls

VSG Enviromation has provided a range of industrial grade and special requirement system controls for the control and monitoring of large centrifugal chillers. Controls apply cooling and industrial processes for both electric motor and steam turbine driven units, operating at fixed and variable speeds. Capacity control, machinery protection and operator interface are implemented with open platform PLC based solutions.

VSG Enviromation is pleased to have recently completed the installation of chiller controls in the King Fahd International Airport, the world largest facility of its kind. The Company has provided chiller controls and accessories to major manufacturers, dealers and end users for over 25 years. Enviromation designs and manufactures a full range of chilled water plant solutions, from controls for sequencing multiple chillers automatically, to SCADA systems for the supervision and remote monitoring of chilled water plants.

Job Histories:

Central Chilled Water Utility Plant Upgrade – King Fahd International Airport – Dammam, Saudi Arabia

Replacement controls were installed for the operation and monitoring of four (4) 5250 ton centrifugal refrigeration machines and associated plant equipment. Additional installations included were: automatic sequencing of chillers, cooling towers, chilled and condenser water pumps, make-up water system, chemical feed system, cooling tower blow-down and plant utility air. The backup diesel generating power system is also monitored by remote supervision. Allen-Bradley SLC5/04 controls are networked on A-B DH+ network. Four chiller local control panels, and a main panel, control sequencing pumps, chillers, cooling towers, and a PLC interface native diesel and generator system. The system is supervised by a Intellution Fix Dynamics SCADA on a Windows NT personal computer.

General Motors/ Saturn – Spring Hill, TN

A G.E. Fanuc PLC controls four (4) large centrifugal chillers providing comfort and process chilled water to an automotive manufacturing plant. Local chiller controls are networked to a Johnson Controls Building Management System for remote monitoring and supervisory control.

Lincoln National Bank – Cleveland, OH

Retrofitting of controls was accomplished with an open drive centrifugal chiller to provide capacity regulation via an electric variable speed drive. A PLC based control interfaces with a chiller native control to provide safety interlocking and inlet coordination.

Variable Speed Centrifugal Water Chiller – Cornell University – Cornell, NY

Installed chiller local controls, using Bailey Infi90 products, for integration into the University’s existing campus wide distributed control and monitoring system. The system was interfaced with a variable frequency wound rotor motor controller for speed control of chiller capacity.

Abu Dhabi International Airport – Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Plant wide controls were installed for an airport central chilled water system. Local controls were installed for two (2) new Carrier 17 Series and four (4) existing York International OM Series centrifugal water chillers. Chilled water circulation pumps, chilled water plant ancillary systems (such as make-up water, blowdown, water treatment, and compressed air systems) also received local controls. The chillers are electrically driven with air-cooled condensers. Nine (9) Modicon 984 programmable controllers, networked via a Modbus Plus data highway, provide distributed control for local equipment and plant sequencing. Two (2) remote supervisory computers are networked via a Modbus Plus and an Ethernet local area network. A supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) was installed using an Intellution Fix/DMACS man-machine interface software.

Philips Electronics – Niemegen, The Netherlands

A Philips PC20 PLC control, of an electric variable speed water chiller, was combined with a environmental process chilled water supply application. ABB Slip recovery variable speed drives were regulated in coordination with inlet guidevanes and hotgas bypass valves to control the capacity of a 1,000 ton centrifugal water chiller. Extensive instrumentation is monitored by PLC, for machinery protection, and relaying, to a supervisory computer for energy management and maintenance analysis.
